USAMRIID Breaks Ground on New Building
The dirt being shoveled marks the official start of construction of the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease and celebrates the Army?s continuous effort to battle infectious diseases. Lt. Gen. Eric Schoomaker Medical Command Commanding General and The Surgeon General, Maj. Gen. James Gilman, Commanding General of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command and Fort Detrick, and Col. John Skvorak, USAMRIID Director, made remarks during the ceremony.
The new building has an estimated completion date of 2014. The total cost is expected to be an estimated $680 million and the size of the building will be 800,000 gross sq. ft. The new building will contain the latest in biocontainment technology. It will also have new and expanded capabilities in many areas, to include imaging, animal telemetry, aerobiology, medicinal chemistry, and molecular studies. USAMRIID will remain the only laboratory in the Department of Defense with Biosafety Level 4 capability.
