AFIRM on Fox's Huckabee Show
ISR's Dr. Steven Wolf and Marine Corporal Isaias Hernandez will appear on the Fox's Huckabee Show August 16th. The segment, focusing on Military Medical Miracles was taped in New York City on August 9th and highlighted the command's work with Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Steven Wolf, Chief, Clinical Trials and Staff Burn Surgeon at USAISR discussed his regenerative medicine work with wounded warriors. Dr. Wolf has used extracellular matrix (ECM) to treat two warriors in an attempt to generate new growth of bone and muscle. Dr Stephen Badylak and Dr. Andrew Lee of the University of Pittsburgh, as well as Josh Maloney the Marine who received a hand transplant at the University of Pittsburgh were also featured on the show. All are part of the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine.
In addition, a study is about to get underway at the USAISR to further evaluate muscle growth in wounded warriors. In the past, Dr. Wolf's work on a wounded Marine who had experienced extensive muscle loss due to combat operations has been featured in the national media, to include "60 Minutes." ECM shows promise as the treated Marine has experienced improvement in muscle strength and mass in the area where ECM was implanted.
