Herbert A. (Herb) Coley, chief of staff of the U.S. Army Medical Command, has been selected to receive the Secretary of the Army's 2012 Diversity and Leadership Award. Coley has served as MEDCOM's chief of staff/Office of the Surgeon General since Jan. 2009, and he was appointed into the Senior Executive Service on Oct. 25, 2009.

Coley holds a B.A. in sociology from Trinity University, having been commissioned Second Lieutenant as a Distinguished Military Graduate, and a M.H.A. from Baylor University. He is a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College and was a fellow at the RAND Arroyo Center.

Among Coley's military assignments are command of Headquarters and Support Company, 25th Medical Battalion, 25th Infantry Division; command of the 507th Medical Company (Air Ambulance); and, commander of the 41st Combat Support Hospital. He also served as a staff officer in the Headquarters, U.S. Army Health Services Command and in the Office of The Surgeon General.

His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (with oak leaf cluster), Meritorious Service Medal (with six oak leaf clusters), and other service awards. He also been honored with the Order of Military Merit and has been awarded the Expert Field Medical Badge and the Senior Aviator's Badge.

The Secretary of the Army Award is presented to an individual who displays purpose, direction, and motivation while accomplishing the mission and improving the organization through executing policy, efficiencies, or business transformations. The result of this should be an increased awareness, education, and understanding of Diversity and Leadership initiatives and programs.
