USAMRIID Officers traveled to Gettysburg for an Officer Professional Development event
Officers from the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious
Diseases traveled to Gettysburg, Pa., for an Officer Professional
Development event led by esteemed Army historian Col. Michael Bell,
currently the Chancellor at the College of International Affairs in
Washington, D.C. Bell set the stage en route with key events that led to the
Civil War, as well as attributes and anecdotes of key Union and Confederate
leaders. He guided the officers around important battlefield sites, from the
initial Confederate attack at McPherson Ridge, to the spirited Union defense
of Little Round Top, a walk of Pickett's Charge, and a reading of Lincoln's
Gettysburg Address at the Soldiers National Cemetery. USAMRIID Officers, led
by deputy commander Col. Andrea Stahl, presented Bell with a Unit coin and
expressed their deepest appreciation for his efforts before returning to
Fort Detrick, Md.
