USAMRMC Looks for Booth Volunteers for Junior Science Symposium
The U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command's Strategic Partnership Office (SPO) is calling for volunteers to participate in the 52nd Junior Science & Humanities Symposium (JSHS), which will be held at the Washington, D.C. Convention Center April 24-27.
The JSHS is a tri-service program funded by the Army, Navy, and Air Force that encourages high school students to conduct original research in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.
USAMRMC will host a booth at the JSHS that showcases the research and product development within USAMRMC, including highlights on biomedical and electrophysiological prosthetics and orthotics. The booth will display several prosthetic limb devices and will include hands-on activities that demonstrate how neurons and neuro-prosthetics work.
"We are looking for volunteers that enjoy interacting with students and parents, and are willing to give several hours of their time," explained Holly Dague, a SPO education administrator. "Subject matter experts will train all volunteers on the activities in the booth so that they can demonstrate the current technology and engage the students with hands-on activities that explore how the brain communicates with our senses, memories and muscles."
About 240 high school students have qualified to participate this year by submitting and presenting original scientific research papers at the regional level. Scholarship awards will be announced and presented to the first, second, and third place winners for each STEM category.
The JSHS is being held in conjunction with the 3rd biannual USA Science & Engineering Festival (USASEF). The USASEF is the largest science festival in the U.S. USASEF is a national grassroots effort to advance STEM education and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. More than 750 STEM organizations will present hands-on science and engineering activities for people of all ages. The USASEF will be held on April 26-27, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.
