USAMRMC Participation in Army Science & Technology Symposium Demonstrates Significance of Medical Research
The U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command had a strong presence at the 2018 National Defense Industrial Association's Army Science & Technology Symposium and Showcase Aug. 21-23 at the Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. The theme was "Empowering a Soldier's Success" – a mission that the USAMRMC embraces every day as Army medical research and technology breakthroughs significantly contribute to optimizing the health and readiness of the Soldier on the battlefield.
Representatives from the USAMRMC's U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory, the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research, the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense, the U.S. Army Center for Environmental Health Research, the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine, the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and the Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center were on hand at the USAMRMC showcase exhibit to discuss innovative science and technology projects with symposium participants.
"The event provided a great opportunity to engage with industry and the Army's science and technology leadership to highlight our ongoing research projects that will provide additional capabilities to the Warfighter," said Rebecca E. Lee, project manager and biomedical engineer at TATRC's Medical Intelligent Systems Laboratory.
DOD science and technology thought leaders including Assistant Secretary of the Army (Acquisition, Logistics and Technology) The Honorable Dr. Bruce D. Jette, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army (Research and Technology) Dr. Thomas P. Russell, and Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. James C. McConville, among others, delivered remarks focusing on current and future military landscapes and how science and technology are crucial components of the Army's priority of modernization.Concurrent technical sessions featuring panels of experts in numerous fields explored topics such as human aptitude assessments, synthetic biology and living materials, artificial intelligence and point of need manufacturing.
Participation in events like the Army Science & Technology Symposium and Showcase educate both participants and presenters, generating a collaborative environment to allow the exchange of information and ideas and explore potential partnerships among government, industry, and academia to support the Nation's Service Members. Lee echoed this sentiment stating, "The event covered the breadth of the Army's S&T portfolio so it was beneficial to be able to inform and receive feedback from participants from many different backgrounds."
