Fort Detrick Observes Women's History Month
The U.S. Army Medical Materiel Agency sponsored Fort Detrick's Women's History Month Observance March 20.
As a time dedicated to honoring and celebrating the struggles and achievements of American women throughout history, Women's History Month holds a deep significance for many citizens in the Frederick area, as demonstrated by their enthusiastic participation in the observance.
The event included several informational displays for observers to read through prior to and at the conclusion of the event.
Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin Stuart read a poem he wrote 10 years ago about his perception of women and their contributions.
"The story of many women in our society speaks volumes of their personal strengths. They tell the stories of their accomplishments and aspirations. It speaks about their insights and intelligence, as well as their struggles and adversities," read Stuart.
Maxine Bowens, USAMMA, also recited a poem, recalling the words of Maya Angelou in "Phenomenal Woman."
Also referencing Angelou's poem, guest speaker Minister Marilyn D. Carter characterized the "phenomenal woman" with many statements, including "she knows it is better to say I tried, than to wish I would have tried."
Carter concluded her speech by announcing, "I wrote this not with me in mind, but with all of the phenomenal women in the room. You are the phenomenal women."
