Workers with the U.S. Army Medical Materiel Center, Europe's Humanitarian Assistance Program (HAP) Division transported their last shipment of humanitarian aid destined for the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union, June 3.

USAMMCE's HAP Division has provided assistance to the former Soviet Union territory as part of the U.S. Department of State's Operation Provide Hope and Disaster Relief missions for nearly two decades.

Workers supported 39 Operation Provide Hope missions transporting $438 million in supplies used to upgrade 277 medical facilities and 274 primary care clinics. According to the State Department's website, donated equipment often meant the difference between life and death.

Division staff also supported 104 special aid and disaster relief missions to manage oil fires, mining disasters, flooding, mud slides, earthquakes, severe cold weather, and a terrorist attack in Belsan, Russia. Overall, the program completed 1,002 airlifts and shipped 24,500 containers of materiel with a total value of $5.2 billion.

The HAP Program officially closes September 30. Workers have begun clearing out their warehouse and turning-in any remaining materiel to the Defense Logistics Agency Disposition Services Office.
